Google G1 – First Android Phone now official @ $179

HTC G1

The wait is over!  The HTC Dream, now the G1! Previously rumored to cost at par with the iPhone at $199 this one actually does better at $179. The HTC G1 is the first Android powered mobile, that will go on sale in the US on TMobile from 22nd October.
The pricing was crucial and that’s where G1 wins, but that’s just half the battle; competing against the iPhone is much more than just the price.

Here, is a quick spec sheet of the G1.

  • HSDPA 1700 / 2100 plus Quadband Edge
  • 3D graphics acceleration
  • 1GB internal memory + MicroSd expansion
  • 3MP camera (no Flash)
  • Android Market (The Appstore for Android devices) Amazon MP3 integrated for music purchases Push Gmail support with full HTML client
  • WiFi + Bluetooth (w/o AD2P)
  • Google Maps + Street View
  • No Microsoft Exchange support
  • No desktop synchronization (it all happens over the air)

Some more details on the Android – HTC – Google G1:

  • The phone would be available contract free @ $399. And can be unlocked after 90 days.
  • Thats standard policy of Tmobile… The card slot is MicroSDHC so 8GB cards would work, and in the future, the 16GB and 32GB would also be supported
  • We hate HTC for this, they are not offering the 3.5mm headphone jack. Instead, their own USB / audio jack combo. Would require an attachment for 3.5mm jack The browser is Google Chrome?
  • No default Video player, but free players are already available for download (remember open source)
